Learning Japanese: Question Sentences

#japanese #language

Today, I learned about question sentences in Japanese, which are divided into two main types: yes/no questions and wh-questions.

1. Yes/No Question

This type of question is used to confirm whether something is true or not, and it can be answered with “Yes” or “No”.

Formula: Noun1 は Noun2 ですか

Explanation: This pattern is used to ask whether one noun is another noun.

Examples:

  • あなたはがくせいですか?
    (Are you a student?)

  • かれはせんせいですか?
    (Is he a teacher?)

Answers:

  • はい、がくせいです。
    (Yes, I am a student)
  • いいえ、がくせいではありません。
(No, I am not a student)

2. Wh-Question

This type of question uses question words to ask for specific information.

Formula: Noun は Question Word ですか

Explanation: The unknown part of the sentence is replaced with a question word.

Common Question Words:

  • だれ → Who
  • なん → What
  • どこ → Where
  • いつ → When

Examples:

  • あのひとはだれですか?
    (Who is that person?)

  • なまえはなんですか?
    (What is your name?)

Summary

  • Yes/No Question → Noun1 は Noun2 ですか
  • Wh-Question → Noun は Question Word ですか
  • Answers use:
    • はい、〜です
    • いいえ、〜ではありません
